Sioux City, IA

Our home base at the confluence of the Missouri, Big Sioux and Floyd Rivers - Woodbury County seat, founded in 1854.

Sioux City was founded in 1854 at the confluence of the Missouri, Big Sioux, and Floyd Rivers, and by the 1880s it had grown into one of the largest livestock markets in the country - the Sioux City Stockyards opened in 1884 and, at their peak, ranked third-largest in the nation behind only Chicago and Omaha. That industrial history still shapes the city's identity, and it's honored today at the Sergeant Floyd Monument, an obelisk overlooking the Missouri River that in 1901 became the first designated National Historic Landmark in the United States, marking the burial site of the only member of the Lewis and Clark expedition to die during the journey.

We run our home routes through Morningside, the tree-lined residential neighborhood built up around Morningside University with some of the heaviest elm and cottonwood canopy in the city, the Leeds neighborhood on the north side, and the West Side across the Floyd River, along with the Historic Fourth Street district downtown where century-old commercial buildings sit blocks from the riverfront. Sioux City's older housing stock - much of it built between 1900 and 1950 in Morningside and the streets closer to downtown - tends to have narrower, original-style gutter profiles that fill up faster under heavy leaf cover and are more prone to ice damming than the wider systems on newer construction further from the city center.

Sitting in the Missouri River valley means Sioux City gets the full swing of a continental climate - hot, humid summers and cold, windy winters, with sharp freeze-thaw cycles in November and March that are exactly when a leaf-clogged gutter turns into an ice dam. The open terrain around the city also means gutters take on wind-blown debris from a wider radius than in more sheltered towns.

We're on a Sioux City route every week, which means we already know which streets under the heaviest elm and cottonwood cover in Morningside need an early-November cleaning before the first freeze, and which newer subdivisions on the outer edges of town can stretch to a single annual visit without issue.

Nearby Cities We Also Serve

We run the same weekly routes across the river into South Sioux City, NE, about 3 miles from downtown, and northwest to Vermillion, SD, about 30 miles away. All three cities get the same firm pricing and the same crew - we don't treat crossing a state line as a special trip outside our normal schedule. If you're somewhere between these three and not sure whether you're on a route, call and we'll give you a straight answer rather than a guess.
